This image, like the previous two, show how freeways can blend in with the surrounding environment. As a result, their toxic effects are hidden from the community.

The image’s subject is the community garden which serves as a proxy for the community itself. The spatial location of the garden near the freeway will inevitably impact the health and quality of life of those who reside near it.

This image has quite a clear impact on the community as the freeway is housed near a garden where people may plant food or even use as a place of tranquility. However, the design statement alludes to rodents as a means of eroding the environment which seems a bit out of place in the context of the theme of these series of images.

Community at risk

I found the juxtaposition of all the different elements of this photo quite stark. The garden near the freeway with a sense of breakdown in infrastructure (garnered from the cracks in the road and chipping of paint on various surfaces) shows how communities will continue to exist in harmful environments. However, these environments will continue to impact these communities in subtle yet harmful ways.
