The Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne hosts a collection of photographs of Askari Soldiers of the German Schutztruppe.The collection of photographs has been put together for the German journal “Kolonie und Heimat”, a propagandistic journal founded by a women’s group after 1907, at the time of the genocidal war in Namibia and subsequently circulated in various German journals.Can we use some of the photos of this collection to read the visual colonial regime against the grain?
