In 2016 the Washington DC Office of Planning began an initiative to develop an LGBTQ historic context statement for the District of Columbia. It initiated conversations about the role of established and emerging LGBTQ civic leadership, and the role of narrative and activism in increasing the visibility of LGBTQ places and institutions within the city.  And catalyzed a larger conversation about how policy, planning, placemaking and partnerships can be used to recognize and affirm LGBTQ identity within the District.
