SoiferI VtP Annotation: Toxic subsistence agriculture

The image was taken by the ethnographer. One aspect that is interesting is the uniformity in color--predominantly green, a color that is often used to symbolize environmentally sustainable and healthy. Yet this is misleading due to the composition of the plants themselves, which are inherently toxic from the minute they sprout. They are not obviously toxic without the further elaboration of the caption, although they also do not look entirely vibrant the way one would imagine them to look, due to the slight yellowing of the leaves. The view down the aisle between plant rows also indicates how extensive the farm is--it seems rather large, thus producing a great amount of these toxic tomatoes, conveying the enormity of the problem and how many people are potentially consuming these plants.
