RossAllana VtP Annotation: Oil, leisure, and masculinity

This visualization addresses the many connotations of toxicity in its relation to masculinity. I'm left with more meaningful questions than concrete answers, which, to me, is a feature of a successful image. How can we visualize and think about masculinity's relationship to landscape, historical and contemporary? What happens when the consequences of an extractive relationship become toxic to the extractor? How does the extractor's reaction relate to dominant ideas of masculinity? How do masculine ideals of protection become complicated when we need to be protected from the results of masculinitiy's actions upon a landscape? Can white, western masculinity ever be disentangled from its history of landscape extraction and toxicity? How do we build a new defnition of masculinity in the face of a toxic future (itself caused by our old ideals of masculinity)?
