Rabach VtP Annotation: Reading Places

SWING politics. Different representations. 91s state district (Norton Shores) is now represented by a Republican, though it’s always a close election and has been represented by a Democrat in the last decade. The 92nd district, including the city of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights, has consistently been represented by a Democratic, usually a big primary race in this district. The state senate level, however, has consistently gone conservative, as well as the U.S House representative for the area. Muskegon has a weak mayoral system, so the city manager, along with the elected commissioners, have more of the central power.. This swingness though shapes the place in more ways than one, especially when places like downtown Muskegon become “hotspots” for people not officially living in that city of district. The boundaries of the different cities in Muskegon County may seem fixed on the map, but those boundaries are crossed by most people everyday.
