By using this image, the author sinks us quickly into the dense reality of extortion and violence in Guatemala. What is tricky, is that the veiwer (in the U.S.) likely has no reference points to understand and interpret the many signs and symbols portrayed. The images are playful and cartoonish, making an outsider likely to misinterpret their meaning. The caption, however, deftly narrates several of the layers that coexist in the image, helping us quickly understand the conditions of injustice and cultural idioms that they represent. The caption also argues that the seemingly playful images allow the viewer to confront the horrific violence otherwise normalized and too difficult to look at directly.
